NEW RELEASE

Gemini - Carol Cassella (2014)

Charlotte Reese is a doctor in the Seattle Beacon Regional ICU. She sees people at their most fragile, while their lives hang in the balance. Though Charlotte tries to keep her emotions in check when dealing with her patients, she can't help but feel pulled into the mystery surrounding a possibly brain-dead unidentified hit-and-run victim; nicknamed Jane Doe. Though Jane has gotten a lot of media attention since she arrived at Beacon Regional, she has yet to be identified by any friends or loved ones. Charlotte becomes almost obsessed with figuring out Jane's backstory, and with her boyfriend Eric's help (Eric is an author focusing on science and genealogy) she's determined to figure out what happened to land Jane into her care. Raney is a young girl in Quentin, Washington. Quentin is a poor but beautiful area, with not much for a girl living with her grumpy grandfather to do. One summer Raney meets Bo, a wealthy city boy who is visiting his aunt. Raney and Bo become fast friends, but are nearing the end of their summer together. The story is narrated by both Charlotte and Raney, and you won't see coming the way they end up being connected - I promise! The way the characters in this book are brought together is genius. The mystery surrounding Jane Doe is fulfilling and worth the wait. Some parts of this book seemed very slow going and sometimes the backstory on some of the characters felt overdone. I unexpectedly learned tidbits about medical procedures and terminology, maybe something I should have anticipated since the author is a practising MD. Overall I enjoyed the book, even if I found the build-up towards the end a bit long for my taste. (AV)
