Rome For Beginners - Fiona Coughlin (2013)
Lilian, Brennan, Suzanne and Charlotte are four expat women from America and England living in Rome. The story, subtitled The Semifictional Misadventures of Four Women, unfolds in the narrow cobble-stone streets of Europe's "Eternal City", where we gain an insider's perspective on what it's like to live in Rome. They are an eclectic mix of middle-aged divorcees, a single mother, and a young athlete, all navigating through language barriers, work visas, crazy room-mates, the Italian dating scene, and more. Although there were several entertaining scenes, I felt that the writing quality was poor. The plot had a lot of holes, and seemed to lack direction. I often had to go back and re-read portions of earlier chapters in an effort to make any sense of what was going on. Frequent editing errors like missing quotation marks and misspelled words were also very distracting. (CK)
