Francine is a successful family lawyer. She works hard, is respected by her colleagues and her clients, and she's about to be promoted. She also has a new man in her life. Martin Joy is charming, handsome, rich, and she is completely in love with him. The only problem? He's divorcing his wife and Francine is his lawyer.
Even though, she knows that what she is doing is wrong and unethical, she can't put a stop to the relationship and, driven by jealousy, she follows him as he has dinner with his soon-to-be ex-wife. A mix of medication and wine means that Francine doesn't remember anything of that night, but when, the next day, she discovers that Martin's wife has disappeared, she knows she needs to remember because she is sure he is innocent. From here Francine makes a series of choices that soon spiral out of control.
I really enjoyed this suspenseful novel with its mystery and twists. There is a love triangle, there is jealousy, there is obsession. And there is also friendship and loyalty. I thought I knew how it was going to end, but I was completely taken by surprise. Well-written and captivating, this is the perfect read for fans of The Girl on the Train and Gone Girl. (NP)
