When Katelyn’s husband decides he doesn’t want to be married to her anymore, Katelyn finds herself at a crossroads between the future she thought she would have as an artist once she and her husband were empty nesters and the reality of being alone at mid-life. In an effort to figure out what’s next, Katelyn heads back to her hometown in Texas, reconnect with her mother, and think about her next chapter. Unfortunately, when her ornery, snob of a mother-in-law, Shirley, learns she is to be shipped off to a retirement community by her son, she decides to go with Katelyn. Not the trip home Katelyn was hoping for but what can she do since her husband has now cast aside his mother, too? Once home, Katelyn gets reacquainted with her high school sweetheart, Jackson, and begins to wonder if maybe small-town life just might be in her future after all.
The Future She Left Behind is a wonderful story about reclaiming your life and finding your passion and purpose in the process, especially when you have no other choice. The characters were full of life and my emotions ran the gamut from happy to annoyed, depending on the person and the situation. This is a great book that you won’t want to miss. (LEK)
