Jane is a teacher in a small Michigan town. She falls for woodturner Duncan, who seems to have former girlfriends continually coming out of the woodwork. This includes his ex-wife Aggie who is now married to the insipid Gary but constantly makes claims on Duncan’s time.
This is a beautifully written story set over nearly two decades. It is very character-driven with a charming cast including Duncan’s co-worker Jimmy who has learning difficulties and Jane’s friend Frieda who is always playing her mandolin. It’s a heartfelt and tender read about love, community and complicated families, reinforcing the small but precious moments in life.
