Family lawyer Esther usually represents women getting out of marriages to bad men and helps them get custody. So people are wondering why the ruthless litigator has agreed to represent egotistical tech billionaire Peter Tranboni against his wife.
This was a somewhat convoluted, dark story, with blackmail, stalking, intimidating messages and murders. Readers slowly realise that a) Esther is hardly the champion for women that she makes herself out to be and b) there’s something a bit off with this book.
Paediatrician Madeline has decided to divorce her husband Greg but wants all their affairs sorted quickly and amicably to spare their 10-year-old daughter Lola.
The plan is for them to share custody, with Madeline remaining with Lola in the family home, which architect Greg designed.
All seems to be going to plan until Greg appoints his lawyer, and soon the couple are enmeshed in legal battles, pointscoring and co-parenting therapy.
This domestic suspense novel centres around divorce and dirty tricks, with neither character emerging well from the experience. The climax seemed a bit over the top (literally).
