Ethan has decided to take a tilt at Congress but he makes for a surprising Republican candidate – mainly because he was once a Democrat and is married to a man. His husband, Gabe, a school teacher, hates his politics but is willing to support his dreams.
Ethan’s sister, Kate, is a political reporter on a newspaper and is told she must stay away from any coverage on her brother. Meanwhile an old flame from her past, Nicole, comes back into her life.
The concept about having to back your spouse even when they are standing against everything you believe in is a conflict that has no doubt played out across many households in the US. This book could have gone a lot harder on that theme and made it a lot more thought-provoking. Its short, sharp chapters, and the interweaving of the two couples’ stories, kept my attention but by the end, it didn’t really feel as if anyone had really made much progress.
