Lola and Duncan are in San Francisco to celebrate their wedding anniversary but things are not as happy as they seem. They are still reeling from losing their eight-year-old daughter two years earlier. Everything changes during a trip to the Napa Valley where Lola falls in love with an old house in need of renovation. To make her happy, Duncan buys her the house and they make the acquaintance of their new neighbours and Cain, the young contractor who will help reshape it. While Duncan is trying to deal with problems back at work in England, Lola is finally enjoying herself organising the renovation of their house in California and trying not to fall in love with Cain. This is an emotional story that narrates the pain that parents go through when they lose a child. It is meant to be a romantic novel too, but it focuses too much on the differences between American and English language and ways of life. The dialogue sounded a little fake and the end was predictable. (NP)
