When You Were Mine - Elizabeth Noble (2011)
Susannah is 40, divorced, childless and has been dating a closed-off man named Doug for more than eight years. She is helping Amelia - her smart-mouthed, brazen best friend since high school - through chemotherapy. You could say her days are full of tasks and void of fun. Susannah's life takes an interesting turn when she runs into Rob - her first love - at her brother's wedding, and he isn't wearing a wedding band. Things get complicated when they decide to become friends again, even though Susannah can't help but fantasise about him and reminisce about their good times. For the first time in her life, Susannah has some hard choices to make alone. Not your average chick lit, this book had many well-fleshed-out characters and a surprise ending. I liked the book but not the constant change in storytelling perspective, which came choppily and without warning. (AV)
When You Were Mine - Elizabeth Noble
Susannah is about to turn 40. She has been living with Doug for nine years, acting as stepmother to his three unappreciative children, and wondering why she doesn't mind much when he sometimes sleeps in his study. Then, at her brother's wedding, she runs into Rob - her first love, the love of her life. There's no band on his ring finger, and Susannah's fantasies unexpectedly turn into reality when Rob gives her a call. Susannah knows she can always turn to her best friend Amelia to discuss what to do; Amelia has known Susannah since high school and can practically finish her sentences. But now, Amelia is confronting her own crisis, one that threatens to tear their friendship apart. Suddenly on her own, Susannah longs simply to fall into Rob's familiar arms. Facing the toughest choices of her life without her familiar guiding star, Susannah must finally test herself and discover how profoundly and deeply connected she is to those around her.
