Stand By Me - Sheila O'Flanagan (2010)
Dazzling Domino, as Dominique Delahaye is known, is the wife of a wealthy businessman and on the outside has the perfect life. She and her husband have always stood by each other no matter what obstacles they've faced in their marriage. Yet as her perfect world begins to come crashing down around her, Dominique - for the first time in her life - has control over her own destiny. Spanning Dominque's adult life, the novel jumps through her pivotal moments, weaving the story of where she came from and how she ended up as the famous dazzling Domino. By jumping through the years you get a great insight into her character and why she makes the decisions she does. It's a brilliant book about relationships between lovers and within families, and how they cope with the decisions they make in their lives. (AB)
Sheila O'Flanagan's Stand By Me is about a woman who seems to live an envied life until her husband disappears. The summary says: "Dominique (Domino) lives a charmed existence as wife to one of Ireland's most successful businesssmen, Brendan Delahaye - until the day Brendan disappears, leaving his company in disarray and Domino and their daughter alone to face the music. This is the story of Domino's recovery and her journey from obliging and dependent wife to a stronger and happier woman, with a new man ready to step into the gap left by her deserting husband. And that's when Brendan comes home, handsome and charismatic as ever, expecting life to carry on just as it was before." O'Flanagan says on her website that: "I wanted to follow a character through her life - the first time I've done this since Dreaming of a Stranger. It was important to me that readers understand the woman Dominique has become and how she got there and the best way to do this, I thought, was to follow her journey." Stand By Me is out in September. You can read a preview here.
