Welcome to My World - Miranda Dickinson (2010)
Travel agent Harri Langton loves the thrill of travelling the world. Her dream destination is Venice with all its romance and splendour. However, the closest Harri has ever come to seeing her beloved Venice is through travel books and TV programs. Though she's happy with her life, there is a nagging feeling of emptiness which won't go away. When Harri's boyfriend, Rob, is tied up with work and Harri is left on her own, she finds herself persuaded to help travel fanatic Alex on his quest for love. In doing so, Harri finds herself enveloped in a whole new set of problems. With Venice at the tip of her fingers, will Harri ever get to see her dream city? Or will she be forever destined to be an armchair traveller, only hearing about other people's experiences? This is a wonderfully heartfelt book that will thaw even the coldest heart. Harri is so passionate about what she wants yet she lets herself get stepped on like so many of us out there. Reading her story, despite the fact that it's fiction, should be enough to make you want to break free of the chains that bind you and go out and chase your dreams. (AS)
Miranda Dickinson's second novel, Welcome to My World, is about a travel agent who hasn't travelled who meets an intrepid explorer. The summary says: "When Harri Langton finds herself locked in the ladies' loo at Stone Langley Village Hall, she has plenty of time to muse on the events leading up to officially The Worst Night of Her Life... Harri is a travel agent with a shameful secret. Despite possessing extensive knowledge of places around the globe, she's never set foot outside the UK. Few of Harri's friends understand her longing to see the world - least of all her boyfriend Rob who still hasn't proposed after seven years of waiting. But when Alex Brannan arrives in town, Harri finds a kindred spirit. A globe-trotting traveller for the past 10 years, Alex's stories light up Harri's world, and in return she becomes his confidante, sharing the highs and lows of his awful love life. But everything changes when Alex's mother suggests her Big Idea - offering Alex up on a plate to the female readership of Juste Moi magazine. How will Alex feel about being sold off as a prize bull? Will Rob ever step up and propose? And will Harri's dreams of exploration ever become a reality?" Welcome to My World is out in November. Dickinson has signed a further three-book deal with Avon - Started with a Kiss with be out later in 2011.
