BOOK NEWS

A few years ago someone sent me an email suggesting I read celebrity journalist Josie Brown's books (Impossibly Tongue-Tied and True Hollywood Lies). I've never been able to track down one of these titles but hopefully I'll have more luck with her upcoming release Secret Lives of Husbands and Wives. The summary says: "The bitter divorce of perfect couple DeeDee and Harry Wilder, and its impact on the gated community in which they live, is seen through the eyes of a neighbour, Lyssa Harper, who doesn't realise the parallels between their marriage and her own. Touched by Harry's efforts at trial-by-error single parenting, Lyssa befriends him, never realising the effect their relationship will have on her close-knit circle of friends - or its explosive impact on her own marriage." Brown reveals on her publisher's website: "I wanted to write a 'fish out of water' book. One plot that struck my fancy was that of a Master of the Universe who decides to change direction and become a stay-at-home dad. For most overachievers, the usual reason for doing so is widowhood - very dramatic! - or, as of lately, a layoff at work . . . But I thought a more interesting catalyst could be spousal desertion. And certainly ego: Harry, the jilted husband is out to prove that a father can also be a great 'mother' to his children." Secret Lives of Husbands and Lives is out in June. You can read an excerpt on Brown's website.
