Revenge Wears Prada - Lauren Weisberger (2013)

Ten years have passed since Andy Sachs unceremoniously quit her job as assistant to the cruel Miranda Priestly, editor-in-chief of Runway Magazine. Though time has passed, her memories of Miranda still give her nightmares. She never wants to see that woman again. Ever. Since then, Andy has struck up an unlikely friendship with her past co-worker and nemesis, Emily. Together, they start a high-end bridal magazine called The Plunge. She meets Max Harrison - a wealthy, handsome, charming man, and seems to be everything Andy ever wanted. Things are looking up for Andy. Until... she finds out that her pompous future mother-in-law is actively trying to get rid of her. And that her husband may be keeping secrets. And that she still might be in love with her ex-boyfriend, Alex. And, perhaps worst of all: Miranda Priestly wants to buy her magazine, and keeps popping up in her life in unexpected ways. Should Andy marry Max anyway? Should she leave her magazine, her baby, that she worked so hard for, in the hands of the devil? After all the hype and anticipation for the sequel to The Devil Wears Prada, I felt a bit let down by this book. It just didn't meet my expectations. The title had me conjuring images of the evil Miranda, going out of her way to wreak havoc on Andy's life. But, Miranda played a rather minor role, and what she did do could hardly count as revenge. It was interesting to find out what happened to the characters from the first book, but it wasn't at all what I expected, and frankly, a bit boring at times. (CK)

Ten years after The Devil Wears Prada, Lauren Weisberger is writing its sequel. In Revenge Wears Prada: The Devil Returns, the story picks up eight years later. The summary says: "Eight years have passed since Andrea "Andy" Sachs quit the job "a million girls would die for" working for Miranda Priestly at Runway Magazine - a dream that turned out to be a nightmare. Now Andy's on the top of the world: she's writing and reporting to her heart's content; running The Plunge, her wildly successful high fashion bridal magazine with Miranda's other ex-assistant, Emily; and most importantly, getting married to the scion of a storied media family and the love of her life. But the night before her wedding, Andy can't sleep. As happy as she is - as happy as she should be - she's still haunted by the spectre of her former boss. Maybe it's survivor syndrome? Or maybe it's justifiable, self-inflicted, paranoia. From the start, Andy and Emily have felt entitled to use their rolodex of contacts - Miranda's contacts - from Runway as they make their way in the magazine world. As The Plunge succeeds, Andy and Emily realise they'll soon come face to face with their former tormenter at industry functions, award ceremonies, and even weddings. Still, Andy can hardly anticipate the horrifying reality that's approaching - a reversal so profound that she will be squarely in Miranda's crosshairs once more. Karma's a bitch. The first book, released in 2003, was loosely based on the author's experiences as Anna Wintour's assistant. It was released as a film in 2006 starring Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep.
