Better Off Without Him - Dee Ernst (2010)

Mona Berman is a successful romance writer who is ready to write her next big novel. Unfortunately, before she gets too far, her husband announces he is leaving her for Dominique, the standard cliche of a mistress: blonde, French and 20 years his junior. While Mona's three daughters are at first understandably upset, they encourage Mona to start dating again once they arrive at their summer cabin where they've spent every summer for as long as they can remember. After 'practice dating' her ugly-hot neighbour, and a series of unsuccessful dates thereafter, Mona finds that what she was really looking for was right in front of her all along. This novel is extremely relatable to someone going through divorce, especially with comments like "I never felt overwhelmed or unable to cope after you'd gone because I did everything myself anyway". Although this would be technically classified as 'hen-lit', this story has those typical chick lit elements of a gay friend, a best friend, and a matter-of-fact aunt who says it like it is. (MD)
