The Futures (2017)

Julia and Evan fell in love at Yale and after graduation they moved together to New York. While Julia doesn’t know what she wants to do, Evan seems to have it all planned out working for a hedge fund firm. As Evan is busy making money, Julia spends more and more time with a man from her past and soon she and Evan are living separate lives. This is a relatable story, exploring the lives of two young people just out of college, still not sure what they want and facing the uncertainty of the future. Julia’s unhappiness comes from seeing that everyone around her seems to know what to do while she is in a job she hates. Evan grew up in a small Canadian town and all his life he has worked hard to succeed and prove himself.
The author perfectly captures these characters’ fears, emotions and hopes by narrating the story from both Julia and Evan’s points of views. This thought-provoking and contemporary debut novel is about growing up, becoming adult and making it on your own. (NP) 8/10
